The Royal Netherlands Meteorlogical Institute (KNMI) real-time radar precipitation composite is now publicly available through the ADAGUC services. This OGC-WMS service can be accessed through the ADAGUC web portal. At the end of this message detailed information is provided on how to access the service.

The ADAGUC project (Space for Geo-information programme, RGI-184) was finished in December 2008 and has resulted in creating web services for a variety of atmospheric datasets. The implementation of the real-time radar service was funded by RGI in the framework of the “Knowledge agenda 2008” that aimed at embedding the results of successful RGI projects.

The Laboratory for Radiation Research (LSO) at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) acted as end user in this embedding project. LSO supports the Dutch government in policy-making, evaluation and inspection, and in prevention and counteracting of nuclear accidents. LSO exploits the National Radiation Monitoring Network (RMN). Incorporation of real-time precipitation information into RMN improves the evaluation of elevated radiation levels.

LSO implemented the radar WMS into their internal web portal and applications to combine the precipitation radar data with European radiological measurement data. By using the OGC web service approach with standardized protocols and the principle of “data at the source”, as proposed by the Netherlands' GIDEON and European INSPIRE programmes, the complexity of data exchange is significantly reduced.

How to access the web service through the web portal:

1) Visit http://adaguc.knmi.nl
2) Select “Web Portal” > “Go to the portal”
3) Select the radar service (click on the drop down button): "RADNL_25CPRR L3 Precipitation”
4) Select one of the color schemes: “_color” or “_KNMI”
5) Zoom in to the Netherlands. Note that the visibility of the results depends on the weather conditions…

A detailed product description and the URL of the WMS service to access the service from WMS enabled applications can be found on http://adaguc.knmi.nl.
